Spring Training Roundup – March 12

Starting pitching was the story as the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays squared off in Grapefruit League action Tuesday afternoon. The Yankees sent Ivan Nova out to the hill, who was looking to build on his solid spring so far. Tampa countered with Alex Cobb, yet another top arm straight out of the Rays’ farm system.

Nova and Cobb stifled hitters, and kept the game scoreless through five innings. Nova went four innings, allowing four hits, walking none, and striking out two. Cobb was very dominant in his five innings of work, striking out six Yankee hitters while conceding just two hits. The solid outing lowered Nova’s ERA to a sparkling 1.00. Brett Marshall followed Nova’s performance by tossing three and two-thirds innings, allowing just one unearned run, and striking out three.

The game’s scoring came all in the eighth inning, with the Yankees outscoring the Rays, 3-1. Bobby Wilson made his one at-bat count, by coming up with a two-run single. Slade Heathcott, the Yankees’ second ranked prospect by Baseball America, drove in his first run of the spring. Thomas Neal singled twice for New York and scored a run.

Derek Jeter will get his first game reps at shortstop on Wednesday, when the Yankees take on the Philadelphia Phillies. Andy Pettitte will make his spring debut on the mound, as the two teams meet in a night contest in Tampa. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

In case you missed it, I had a chance to sit down with RailRiders hitting coach Butch Wynegar. You can read the interview here.
