Four-Run Eighth Dooms RailRiders in 5-4 Loss
Rochester, N.Y. – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) saw a two-run eighth inning lead evaporate when Doug Bernier and James Beresford delivered back-to-back doubles to cap a four-run frame. The result was a 5-4 loss to the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (65-71) authored a three-run first that saw all nine RailRiders trot to plate against starter Tyler Duffey. Jose Pirela opened the frame with a single to left and scored when Ramon Flores belted a two-run home run to right, 2-0. The home run by Flores was the first of two on the day for the RailRiders’ slugger. Rob Refsnyder kept the inning going with a walk and Kyle Roller’s opposite-way double scored Refsnyder from first to make it 3-0.
Zach Nuding spun five solid innings and allowed one run on six hits and struck out three, his only miscue transpiring when Daniel Ortiz mashed a one-out solo home run to right in the second. With the score at 3-1, Nuding scattered four hits after Ortiz’s dinger before handing the baton to a trio of relievers Chase Whitley, Nick Rumbelow, and Edgmer Escalona.
Whitley, making his first appearance for SWB since May 12, allowed back-to-back hits to open the sixth. Whitley recorded successive strikeouts to Aaron Hicks and Bernier before finishing off the inning with a ground ball back to the mound. Rumbelow (0-1) entered in the eighth and allowed all four runs in the inning to take the loss. Rochester’s Aaron Thompson (3-3) claimed the win in relief, spinning two scoreless innings and striking out one in the win. Stephen Pryor (2) allowed a home run to Flores in the ninth, but finished the game by retiring Refnsyder on a pop out to second for the save.
