Bats Back Mitchell as RailRiders Take Series Opener
Moosic, Pa. – One of the most anticipated pitching match-ups of the year didn’t disappoint. Rising prospects Byran Mitchell and Henry Owens took to the hill for their respective clubs, with each dazzling along the way. It was the offence that provided the highlights in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders’ (Triple-A/New York Yankees) 4-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) Friday night.
Mitchell needed 27 pitches to work through the first inning. Mookie Betts and Alex Hassan poked singles to left and Mitchell loaded the bases on a walk before retiring Blake Swihart on a weakly tapped ground ball. Mitchell (4-1) issued just two base hits the rest of the way, retiring 11 of 12 batters from the second inning on before exiting after five complete frames in the win. He struck out three batters on 86 pitches for his fourth straight win.
The offense gave Mitchell some early support. Kyle Roller tripled for the third time this season and scored on Zelous Wheeler’s blistered ball to center for the initial run in the second. Two more runs circled the bases on Carmen Angelini’s crushing two-out two-run tater in the fifth. Wheeler followed successive strikeouts in the sixth with a solo blast to exten the SWB lead to 4-0.
Diego Moreno relieved Mitchell and promptly issued back-to-back knocks to open the seventh. The lone Paw Sox run crossed on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Rivero that drew it to 4-1. Moreno spun two innings before relievers Nick Rumbelow and Edgmer Escalona closed the game with scoreless frames. Escalona’s (3) perfect ninth also meant a save. Owens (1-1) spun six innings and issued two home runs and hit a pair of hitters in the loss.
The RailRiders will continue the four-game road trip against the Pawtucket Red Sox Saturday, August 16 at 6:05 p.m. The RailRiders will toss left-handed pitcher Nik Turley (2-2, 5.58) while Pawtucket spins left-hander Chris Hernandez (4-7, 3.95).
