Canzler’s Home Run Propels RailRiders to Sixth-Straight Win

Moosic, Pa. – Russ Canzler blasted a home run and Austin Romine added two hits in pacing the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (18-15) to a 3-2 victory Friday night at PNC Field over the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays). The win marked the sixth-straight for SWB and moved the RailRiders to within 1.5 games back of the International League North division standings.

Durham tagged RailRiders starter Joel De La Cruz with a run in the first. Hak-Ju Lee led-off with a single, stole a bag and moved to third on a deep fly before scoring on a groundball by Jerry Sands for the 1-0 lead.

SWB evened the contest in the fifth.  Austin Romine reached on an infield hit and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dean Anna. The sacrifice fly by Anna was his second of the year.

Kevin Kiermaier opened the visiting sixth with a single and snagged second and third before plating the go-ahead run on a passed ball that tilted the advantage back in favor the Bulls, 2-1.

Russ Canzler ignited a RailRider two-run sixth with a solo home run off Bulls’ starter Merrill Kelly. Jose Pirela followed with a single and moved to second on a walk by Ramon Flores before Zelous Wheeler plated Pirela on a single to left. The run by Pirela pushed SWB’s lead to 3-2.

De La Cruz tossed five innings and combined with four other RailRiders pitchers to finish off the contest. Jose Ramirez (1-0), despite allowing a run in the sixth, notched the win and Kelly (4-1) was slated with the loss, his first since August 16, 2013 against the Charlotte Knights. Matt Daley (5) allowed a hit in the ninth, but finished the game by retiring his final three batters for the save. 

The RailRiders continues the four-game series at PNC Field with the second of four contests against the Durham Bulls Saturday, May 10 at 7:05 p.m. SWB sends right-hander Shane Greene (0-0, 4.66),while the Bulls sending righty Matt Andriese (1-3, 5.55) to the hill. Austin Romine collected two hits and now has multiple hits in three of his last four games (7-for-15, 4R, HR, 2B)

Russ Canzler’s home run in the sixth was his second of the season, both have come against Durham.
