Moosic, Pa. – On the heels of Chase Whitley’s 11 strikeout day against Indianapolis, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders got an equally stellar start from Brian Gordon. The converted pitcher twirled seven innings of one-run ball, limiting the Tribe to seven base hits in the RailRiders 3-1 win Wednesday afternoon at PNC Field. The marked the fourth-straight for SWB as the club will look for the series sweep Thursday night.
Gordon labored early in the first, allowing a run after Jaff Decker doubled to begin the frame and Gregory Polanco brought him home with a laser to right for the early 1-0 lead. The run marked the first lead of the series for Indianapolis in 18 prior innings.
SWB was quick to respond, plating a run in the home half of the first. Antoan Richardson was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a throwing error by Indianapolis starter Brandon Cumpton. Zoilo Almonte evened things with an extra-base hit center to plate the tying run, 1-1.
Runs were scarce in the middle frames as both pitchers settled into a groove. Cumpton retired nine batters before the RailRiders put together its second hit in the fourth. The next run scoring opportunity for SWB didn’t occur in the seventh inning when Zelous Wheeler reached on a single before moving to third on a miscue by Cumpton. SWB provided a little insurance for Gordon as Ramon Flores clubbed his first sacrifice fly on a ball to deep center to extend the RailRiders lead to 2-1.
The last run crossed in the home eighth as Dean Anna singled to right and moved to third after outfielder Gregory Polanco misplayed the base hit. Polanco’s error allowed the ball to skip to the wall, allowing Anna to take second and third. After Almonte was hit by a pitch, NEPA product Russ Canzler walked to load the bases before Oliver brought a run to home on a bases loaded walk to Wheeler. The single tally proved to be enough as the RailRiders hung on to win 3-1.
Gordon (2-2) picked up his first win of the season at PNC Field as the outing was the longest of the season for the right-hander, while Cumpton’s (2-1) two unearned runs slate him with the loss. Matt Daley (4) spun a scoreless ninth in earning the save.
The RailRiders will look for a series sweep Thursday, May 8 at 6:35 p.m. as the club hosts the Indianapolis Indians for the final game of the four-game set. SWB will send right-hander Zach Nuding (0-1, 24.00) to the hill, while the Indianapolis twirls righty Brian Cumpton (2-0, 1.43). John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on television as Jim Riley fills in on radio with the pregame show beginning at 6:05 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio – The GAME, Northeast PA’s largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
