Whitley’s Career Day Leads RailRiders to Victory
Moosic, Pa. – After claiming the first game of the four-game run against the IL West’s best, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (15-15) called upon the right of Chase Whitley to show them the way. The former Troy University standout tossed a season-high 6.2 innings and struck out a career-best 11 batters en route to a 2-1 RailRiders win Tuesday night at PNC Field. The win guarantees the RailRiders at least a split of the four-game series against the Tribe and also marks the first three-game winning streak of the season for SWB.
Whitley fanned four batters in his first two innings before the RailRiders plated its first run. Adonis Garcia reached on a single and scored on the base hit by Zelous Wheeler to give the RailRiders the early 1-0 advantage.
With the lead, Whitley shined striking out seven of the first 12 batters he faced, while not giving way to a base hit until the fifth. The biggest tilting point of the ballgame occurred in the same frame. After Whitley allowed a single to Nevin Ashley, Jaff Decker added a ground-rule double to left that halted Ashley at third. With runners in scoring position, Whitley induced a fly out to Michael Martinez that ended the threat.
The RailRiders added to the lead in the eighth as Scott Sizemore reached on a single and moved to third on a wild pitch, before Zoilo Almonte delivered a thunderous double to right-center that pushed the lead to a two run affair.
The Indians tried its best to supplant a rally, after reliever Robert Coello hit Robert Andino and allowed him to advance to second on a passed ball. The Indians first run crossed after Gregory Polanco singled to right drew the deficit to one. Coello carved up Brent Morel for the second out before inducing a fly out by Chris McGuinness to end the threat.
Whitley (3-2) tossed six shutout innings to earn the win while Vance Worley (0-1) was the tough luck loser, tossing six innings and allowing a single run. The save by Coello (1) was his first of the season.
The RailRiders will continue an eight-game homestand Wednesday, May 7 at 10:35 a.m. as the club hosts the Indianapolis Indians for the third of a four-game tilt. SWB will toss right-hander Brian Gordon (1-2, 4.88) while the Indians twirl righty Brian Cumpton (2-0, 1.43). John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 10:05 a.m. on NEPA Sports Radio – The GAME, Northeast PA’s largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
