Ramon Ortiz gets the start in a “must win” game for SWB down 0-1 in the best of five first round series vs. Pawtucket

SWB YANKEES GAME NOTES – Game # 2 International League Playoffs (PAW leads 1-0)
9-6 Notes

THE STARTER…
Ramon Ortiz  gets the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a “must win” situation for the Yankees to avoid falling behind the Paw Sox in the best of five opening round playoff series 0-2…The right hander makes his fourth start of 2012 against Pawtucket in game two on Thursday night…Ortiz went 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA against the Paw Sox during the regular season including 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA (14.0IP / 4ER) in a pair of starts at McCoy Stadium…In a “home” start on August 15th Ortiz outdueled Daisuke Matsuzaka throwing a complete game in the opening game of a double header…His final regular season start came at McCoy on August 31st where he picked up his 13th win of the season allowing 3R (3ER) over 7.0 IP with 6K…Overall Ortiz is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA (20.0 IP / 7ER) in three career starts against the Paw Sox… After beginning his spring in the San Francisco Giants organization, Ortiz signed minor league deal with the Yankees on April 9th…The Yankees are Ortiz’s 11th organization: The Angels, Reds, Nationals, Twins, Rockies, Giants, Dodgers, Mets, Rays, and Cubs are the others.

TRYING TO BUCK HISTORY…
The Yankees lost the opening game of the first round playoff series for the third time in SWB Yankees franchise history with the 7-4 loss to Pawtucket on Wednesday…The SWB Yankees have never dropped the opening game of a playoff series and have come back to win…In 2007 Richmond defeated Dave Miley’s first SWB Yankees playoff team 3-2 in the opening game at the Diamond.  The Yankees won game two, 6-4, to even the series at 1-1.  Richmond won the next two games at PNC Field to take the series 3-1…In 2010 the Yankees dropped the opening game of the best of five series at Columbus 6-4 in 10 innings.  SWB picked up a 5-4 win in 10 innings the following night to even the series up before dropping the next two to the Clippers to lose the series 3-1…The only time in SWB Yankees franchise history that the team lost the first two games of a playoff series was in the ’09 Governors’ Cup Finals falling behind Durham 0-2.  The Bulls completed the sweep over the Yankees with a win in game three.

YARD WORK IN WEDNESDAY’S LOSS…
The Yankees got a pair of homers in the opening game loss to Pawtucket on Wednesday night, one from a probable source and the other from an unlikely one.  Luke Murton homered in his second at bat after getting the call up from Double-A Trenton prior to the start of the playoffs.  Murton hit a career high 25 homers with the Thunder this season. Kevin Russo hit his first homer of the season after not going yard in 402 regular season at bats.
