Yankees Work Extra to Pick up Seventh Straight Win
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre needs 12 innings to down Buffalo, 2-1

Buffalo, NY – Francisco Cervelli’s sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th inning was the difference as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre picked up their seventh straight win and moved five and a half games ahead of idle Pawtucket in the International League North with a 2-1, 12 inning win over Buffalo on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field.

The Yankees picked up their first run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Chris Dickerson RBI single to left field.  Kevin Russo led off the inning with a flare to right just out of the reach of second baseman Brad Eamus.  Russo was running on a 1-2 pitch and made it safely into second base on the Ramiro Pena ground out.  Russo scored from second without a throw for Dickerson’s 25th RBI of the season and a 1-0 Yankees.

Adam Warren pitched scoreless baseball through the fifth inning allowing just two hits to Buffalo during his start.  The right hander walked one and struck out four, giving him a team high 101 on the season.

Buffalo tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning at 1-1 picking up a run off Yankees reliever Chase Whitley.  The right hander walked the leadoff man Adam Loewen to put the tying run on base.  With Loewen at first and none out, Josh Satin moved Loewen to third with a base hit to right field.  With runners on the corners Matt den Dekker’s ground out deep in the hole at second base scored Loewen from third to tie the game.

Bisons starter Jenrry Mejia tossed 6.0 innings allowing seven hits and one run, allowing one walk with six strikeouts.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had a great opportunity in the top of the 10th inning after Bison reliever C.J. Nitkowski walked Dickerson and Corban to open the inning but the Yankees could not get the go ahead run home.  Eduardo Nunez popped out to shortstop, and both Brandon Laird and Kosuke Fukudome flew out to right field as the game stayed tied 1-1.

Both the Yankees and Bisons had chances in extra innings before the Yankees grabbed the lead in the top of the 12th inning.  SWB put runners at first and second with none down in the 10th but could not score.  Buffalo had second and third with none down against Ryota Igarashi (WP, 3-2) and failed to score in the bottom of the 11th as the right hander pitched himself out of a mess with a pair of strikeouts and a fielder’s choice.

The Yankees got the winning run home in the 12th inning with the bat and legs of Nunez.  Nunez led off the inning with a single to left and then stole second and third base off Bisons reliever Fernando Cabrera (LP, 4-5).  With one out, Buffalo elected to walk Fukudome to set up a potential inning ending double play.  Instead of a ground ball, the Yankees got a fly ball from Francisco Cervelli for a sacrifice fly scoring Nunez for a 2-1 lead.

Igarashi set down the Bisons 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of the 12th to secure the Yankees seventh consecutive win.  The victory also knocked Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s “magic number” to clinch the IL North down to seven.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues five straight games in Buffalo with the second game of a three game road series on Thursday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch from Coca-Cola Field.  Left hander Mike O’Connor (3-6, 3.73 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees.  Buffalo has not announced a starter for Thursday’s game.
