Yankees Win Fifth Straight with 7-5 Win over Buffalo
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre “magic number” down to nine with win and Pawtucket loss

Buffalo, NY – Ramon Ortiz (WP, 12-5) picked up his 12th win of the season and Brandon Laird and Eduardo Nunez each drove home two runs as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre won its fifth consecutive game beat the Buffalo Bisons 7-5 in the opening game of a two game “home” series for the Yankees and the first of five straight games against Buffalo.

Buffalo struck first in the top of the second inning off Ortiz with a two run homer from Matt Tuiasosopo.  With two out and no one on, Josh Satin extended the inning for Tuiasosopo who took an Ortiz offering over the wall in left center for a 2-0 Bisons lead.

The Yankees would chip away against Buffalo Chris Schwinden (LP, 7-9), who was a Yankee for a day, making a July 1st start for SWB at Frontier Field against Rochester. Mesa extended his hit streak to seven with his fifth homer of the season, a two-out blast off the batter’s eye in centerfield. Laird tied the game at 2-2 with a leadoff homer off Schwinden to open the fourth.   Laird’s 15th homer of the season knocked in his 70th run of the year on the line drive over the wall in deep left center.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre grabbed a 4-2 lead in the fifth on back-to-back two out RBI singles from Eduardo Nunez and Laird.  Schwinden’s night was done after the fifth inning but the Yankees were not done scoring.  Chris Dickerson and Nunez added RBI’s in the bottom of the sixth inning off reliever C.J. Nitkowski to run the score to 6-2.  Dickerson got a run home on a bases loaded fielder’s choice before Nunez added his second RBI of the night with a two out single to left.

Austin Romine added his fourth RBI of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning to close out the scoring for the Yankees off reliever Garrett Olson, the fourth Bison pitcher of the night. The hit scored Nunez who picked up a one out walk and stole his third base of the night to get into scoring position.

Buffalo added one run in the seventh inning, the last inning for Ortiz on a double by Adam Loewen and following a passed ball a sacrifice fly from Satin.  The Bisons scored two in the ninth on a wild pitch from Ryota Igarashi (SV, 9) and an infield single from Matt den Dekker but could get no closer than 7-5.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues five straight games in Buffalo with the second game of a two day “home” series Tuesday afternoon with a 1:05 PM first pitch from Coca-Cola Field.  Left hander Justin Thomas (1-1, 3.75 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees with right hander Zack Wheeler (0-1, 4.60 ERA) getting the start for the Bisons.
