The Yankees Come Out Hitting in 10-3 Win over Rochester
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bangs out season high 20 hits and move 17 games over .500

Rochester, NY – The last time the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees faced Rochester Red Wings starter Shairon Martis, the right hander was tough on the Yankees allowing just two runs over seven innings.  Saturday night was a different story as SWB picked up six runs in two and 1/3 innings off the Rochester starter on route to a 10-3 in the opening game of the two game series at Frontier Field.

The Yankees banged out a season high 20 hits as every starter had at least one hit and eight of the nine starters had multiple hits in the victory.

Darnell McDonald led off the top of the first inning with a walk and went first to third on the first of three hits by Corban Joseph and scored on Brandon Laird’s RBI single to centerfield to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would add runs in each of the next three innings against the Wings picking up three runs in the second and the third and one more in the fourth to jump out to an 8-0 lead.  Joseph hit a three run homer in the second, his 12th of the season for a 4-0 lead.  Francisco Cervelli and Melky Mesa drove home runs in the fourth as Martis was done with one out in the third.  Kosuke Fukudome added a third inning RBI single off Wings reliever Bobby Lanigan to push the lead to 7-0.

Cervelli added his second RBI of the night on his second sacrifice fly, also coming off Lanigan as the SWB lead grew to 8-0 heading to the fifth.

The Red Wings picked up three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning which was the final inning of the night for Yankees starter Mike O’Connor.  Tsuyoshi Nishioka hit his second homer of the season, a two run shot with two out, into the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen in left. After a walk to Brian Dinkleman and a single by Chris Parmelee, Wilken Ramirez singled to left scoring Dinkleman to close the gap to 8-3. O’Connor picked up his third win of the season tossing five innings with a season high nine strikeouts.

Austin Romine added two runs to the Yankees tally in the eighth with his first home run in a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees uniform pushing the final margin up to seven runs at 10-3.  Romine appeared in four games with SWB in 2011 without a homer and in his seventh game with the Yankees in 2012 took Deolis Guerra over the wall in left.

Kelvin Perez and Juan Cedeno each added two scoreless innings of relief in support of O’Connor in non save situations.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester wrap up the season series with a 6:05 PM game on Sunday night from Frontier Field.  Right hander John Maine (5-5, 6.53 ERA) gets the start for the Yankees with right hander P.J. Walters (3-1, 2.85) getting the start for the Red Wings.

WOW!! Great Game!! We did not get outhit in this game- Everyone had at least two hits except for Francisco Cervelli who drove in two runs. Pitching very good– We can sure turn some nice double plays. Let’s keep rolling.
