Deja Vu All Over Again

As the Yankees great Yogi Berra once said “it’s deja vu all over again.”  That applies to the fourth game of the five game four day series between the SWB Yankees and the Pawtucket Red Sox, who will once again play for the top spot in the IL North.  The Yankees have a one game advantage heading into Thursday’s game with the Paw Sox right on the Yankees heels.  SWB has spent the last eight days alone atop the IL North, its longest stretch since the 2010 season (which was also the last time that the Yankees won the division).

The Yankees and Red Sox split Wednesday’s double header with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre winning the first game of the twin bill 5-1 behind the complete game effort of Ramon Ortiz.  Ortiz threw 117 pitches in the win, setting the highest pitch count for any Yankees pitcher this season.  Trailing 1-0, Melky Mesa tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double off Red Sox starter Daisuke MatsuzakaKosuke Fukudome delivered a two run single to give SWB its first lead at 3-1 in the same inning.  All told the Yankees picked up five runs in the bottom of the fifth ininng off Matsuzaka in the game one win.

Game two of the DH was a rain shortened affair getting called after the top half of the fifth inning was played in a downpour at McCoy Stadium.  The Yankees took a two game lead in the IL North into the second game but fell short to former Yankee and Red Baron Nelson Figueroa who picked up the win.  Manny Delcarmen took the loss in the spot start for the Yankees allowing two runs in the first inning and three in the third.  The Yankees had first and third with none out to open the top half of the fifth inning but could only manage one run.

The Yankees headed into the All-Star Break with a 48-43 record and sat in third place in the IL North 4.0 games behind first place Lehigh Valley and 2.5 games behind second place Pawtucket…Since play resumed following the break, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester have the best record amongst the teams in the North…The Yankees and Red Wings are each 21-13, Pawtucket is 18-16, Syracuse 17-18, Lehigh Valley 15-20 and Buffalo is 14-20…Including the completion of a suspended game at Syracuse from April 10th (completed on July 12th) since the ASB, the Yankees have picked up 7.0 games in the standings against the Iron Pigs and 3.5 games on Pawtucket.
