The Battle for the Top Spot in the North

FIRST PLACE ON THE LINE…
The Yankees and Red Sox will play two games from McCoy Stadium on Wednesday night and in the first game of the twin bill, first place in the IL North is at stake.  If Scranton/Wilkes-Barre picks up the first game win, the Yankees lead will go from one game to two.  If the Paw Sox win the opening game, the two teams will be in a dead heat at 69-56 and the North will be tied up for first time since August 4th.

SWB will send right hander Ramon Ortiz to the mound in game one while Pawtucket will send out Triple-A’s best paid right hander Daisuke Matsuzaka (who is actually on a Major League Rehab and therefore not actually on the Triple-A roster). In the second game of the DH it will be a former Red Sox going for the Yankees and a former Yankee getting the start for the Red Sox.  SWB will send former Boston and Pawtucket Red Sox Manny Delcarmen to the mound for his second start of the season and his first since opening night at Lehigh Valley.  Pawtucket counters with former SWB Yankee (and Red Baron) Nelson Figueroa.

BEST SINCE THE BREAK…
The Yankees headed into the All-Star Break with a 48-43 record and sat in third place in the IL North 4.0 games behind first place Lehigh Valley and 2.5 games behind second place Pawtucket.  Since play resumed following the break, the Yankees have the best record of the team’s that held the top three spots in the IL heading into the break.  The Iron Pigs have gone 14-20, the Red Sox 17-15 while the Yankees have posted a 21-12 record: a 7.5 game swing against LHV and a 3.5 game reversal against PAW.

YANKEES DOODLES…
In eight head-to-head matchups vs. Pawtucket in 2012 the Yankees are 2-6 and have been outscored 44-30…SWB is hitting .234 against the Paw Sox with a 5.14 ERA, while Pawtucket is hitting .280 against the Yankees with a 3.30 team ERA…Andy LaRoche’s Grand Slam allowed by John Maine is the second allowed by an SWB pitcher this season.  Adam Warren gave up a slam to Lehigh Valley’s Tug Hullett on July 5thFrancisco Cervelli leads all IL hitters with 13 hit by pitch in 2012…With Tuesday’s loss, SWB starting pitchers are three games under .500 on the season at 35-38…Yankees relievers are 17 games over .500 at 34-17…

WOW! Our relievers have been great this season– Poor Francisco Cervelli –13 times hit by a pitch!! That’s a tough on base statistic to lead in.
