PawSox Strike Back with 4-2 Win in Series Finale
Jason Repko’s two-run blast in 2nd proves to be enough to put Pawtucket back atop the IL North

Rochester, NY – The International League North race is becoming a three horse race between Pawtucket, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Lehigh Valley. The Pawtucket Red Sox regained the division’s top spot with a 4-2 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Tuesday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY.

Mauro Gomez put Pawtucket on the board in the top half of the first with an RBI single to left field. Repko scored easily from second after being hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Gomez’s 61st RBI of the season gave the PawSox a 1-0 advantage heading into the home half of the first.

Jason Repko then extended the lead to 3-1 with a two-run blast into the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen in the top half of the second. Jonathan Hee made the trot around the bases on Repko’s 6th homer of the season after reaching on an infield single earlier in the inning. The home run proved to be the difference in the ballgame as the Yankees scored two runs.

The Yankees got one back in the bottom half of the fifth when Darnell McDonald crushed a solo homer way over the centerfield fence. It was McDonald’s first homer and RBI as a member of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Andy LaRoche provided Pawtucket with an insurance run in the top half of the sixth with an RBI double to left-centerfield, making it a 4-1 Pawtucket lead.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre cut the Pawtucket lead in half when Eduardo Nunez roped a double off the left-centerfield field wall, then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on yet another passed ball. However, 4-2 was as close as the Yankees would come as they failed to get any closer in the contest.

Ortiz suffered the loss for the Yankees, falling to 9-4 on the season. The veteran right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings on the mound, He stuck out two and walked two. Justin Thomas tossed two innings of shutout ball in relief of Ortiz, while striking out three Pawtucket hitters. Stewart earned the win tossing five innings allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out eight. With the win he improved to 2-2 on the season. Chris Carpenter picked up his 2nd save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

With the loss the Yankees are again 0.5 games out of the International League North Division. However, they still hold a 2.0 game lead over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the wildcard race. The Yankees get the day off on Wednesday before beginning a four game home series against the Indianapolis Indians at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY. Adam Warren (6-6, 3.69) is scheduled to make the start for the Yankees, while fellow righty Daniel Cabrera (4-5, 4.37) gets the nod for the Indians.
