Russo and Phelps return, Yankees look to keep climbing the standings

David Phelps returns to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre rotation for the first time in 2012 in Saturday night’s series opening game against the Syracuse Chiefs. Phelps is coming off of a fantastic outing with the Double-A Trenton Thunder. In the outing, Phelps earned the win, while allowing just one hit over 6 2/3 inningso n the mound. He struck out 11 and walked just one in his only outing with the Thunder in 2012. With the New York Yankees, Phelps appeared in 15 games, including three starts. During his time in the Majors, Phelps racked up 41.1 innings, allowed 37 hits and 14 earned runs. He struck out 42 and walked 17 en route to a 1-3 record with a 3.05 ERA. He was recently sent down to the minors in order to get more innings in and to be stretched out. In 2010, Phelps received the Kevin Lawn Award, which is given to the Yankees top minor league pitcher each year. Baseball America also credited Phelps with having the best slider in the organization in 2010. In 2011, Phelps combined to go 7-7 with a 2.99 ERA in 20 starts spread over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the GCL Yankees. He was added to the New York Yankees 40-man roster on 11/18/11.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are currently third in the International League North, behind the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Despite being 3.0 games behind the IL North leading IronPigs, the Yankees are still in a very good position to make the playoffs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre basically controls its own destiny with 31 of the remaining schedule being against IL North rivals. Of those 31 contests, 16 of them come against either the Pawtucket Red Sox or the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. As of today, the Yankees are also just 0.5 games out of the International League Wild Card leading Pawtucket Red Sox. Heading into the series opener, the Yankees were four games out, but they picked up 1.5 games due to both Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley losing their games last night.
