The “Run for the Roses” and the halfway point

The two things that are impossible to travel to Louisville and either not see, hear or talk about are the Kentucky Derby and Louisville Slugger (more on baseball bats in an upcoming post).  The “Run for the Roses” happens on the first Saturday in May at Churchhill Downs in Louisville and the Yankees team hotel has a rich tradition of housing derby winning jockeys and trainers.  The above photo is the salute to the derby winning jockeys from years past.  With a rose and the signuature and hands prints of the winning jockey and a placque commemorating the year and winning horse that jockey rode.  Below is the hand prints and the rose from 1978 Kentucky Derby winner Steve Cauthen, the Triple Crown winning jockey on Affirmed.  The last horse to win the Triple Crown

The Yankees play their 72nd game of the season on Tuesday night, marking the halfway point of the 2012 campaign.  With a win SWB can match their high water mark for the year at 10 games over .500 and would post a “first half” record of 41-31.  Through 72 games in 2011 the Yankees were 39-33, in 2010 the midway point of the season had the team at 40-32.  The best 72 game mark for a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees team was in 2008 when the eventual Governors’ Cup Champions were 44-28 through 72 games.

Special Assistant to New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, Jim Hendry is in attendance for the final three games of the Louisville series.  Hendry, the former General Manager of the Chicago Cubs was hired by the Yankees at the outset of spring training 2012 and has been with the Yankees since February, assisting Brian Cashman in a number of duties including the 2012 First Year Player Draft.  Hendry rose to the General Manager position with the Cubs through the player development system, draft and developing many of the Cubs start players in the late 1990’s and the early 2000’s.  You can listen to Tuesday night’s pregame interview with Hendry further down the page.
