Tides Sweep Yankees in Twin Bill
Miguel Tejada and Jamie Hoffman Lead Norfolk to 3-1 and 5-1 victories over SWB
Norfolk, VA – After taking three of four from the Toledo Mud Hens as the home team at Frontier Field, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (29-26) have lost three straight games over the past two days on the road in Norfolk. The Tides (25-31) swept a twin bill with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday night with a 3-1 win in game one and a 5-1 victory in game two.
The only Yankee run in game one was set up by a double off the bat of Russel Branyan. Francisco Cervelli then brought Branyan home with an RBI single just one at bat later cutting the Norfolk lead to 2-1. However, the Cervelli RBI single was all the offense Scranton/Wilkes-Barre could create in game one. Miguel Tejada led the Tides in game one going 2-3 with two-RBI.
Despite ultimately earning the loss, Nelson Figueroa was able to go the distance in game one. The veteran right-hander tossed six innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three. Norfolk starter Tommy Hunter saw Figueroa’s six innings and raised him one tossing a seven inning complete game allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out one and walking one.
The Tides offense continued to produce in game two as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the first on RBI singles off the bat of Jamie Hoffman and Jai Miller. Norfolk added two more runs in the top of the fourth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Hoffman and Miguel Tejada. Xavier Avery extended the Tides lead to 5-1 with a sacrifice fly to right field in the top half of the fourth. This proved to be more than enough as the Tides hung on for the 5-1 win in game two.
Mike O’Connor suffered the loss for the Yankees in game two, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out five and walking none. Chase Whitley tossed three innings of scoreless ball in relief of O’Connor, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Zach Clark earned the win for Norfolk throwing 5.1 innings allowing just one run on seven hits, while striking out three. Zach Phillips and Pat Neshek combined to toss the final 1.2 innings allowing no runs on three hits.
The Yankees and Tides take the field again Sunday afternoon at 1:15 for yet another double-header at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Virginia. Adam Warren (2-3, 4.48) gets the nod for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in game one, while the Tides counter with fellow right-hander Steve Johnson (1-3, 2.62). Jason Bulger (1-0, 4.19) takes the ball in game two for the Yankees, while the Tides starter has yet to be determined.
