Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Walks Off Winners in 8-7 Win over Toledo

Rochester, NY – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (28-22) have been notorious for comeback wins in 2012. Heading into the second game of a four game series against the Toledo Mud Hens (24-28), the Yankees had come from behind in 15 of their 27 wins on the season. Tuesday was more of the same. After the Mud Hens scored four in the top of the ninth to take a 7-5 lead, SWB rallied in the bottom half of the inning scoring two to tie and when pinch hitter Colin Curtis drew a bases loaded walk scoring Jack Cust, the Yankees had a come from behind 8-7 win.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on back-to-back homers by Steve Pearce and Cust. Both solo home runs came with two outs in the inning. Cust hit his second solo home run of the night over the right field fence, extending the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 3-0 after three innings of play.
Eric Patterson tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run home run to left-centerfield in the top half of the sixth. Matt Young led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre shortstop Ramiro Pena and Brad Eldred drew a walk to set up the three run homer with nobody out.
The Yankees struck back in the bottom half of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ronnier Mustelier. Pearce led off the inning with a single to center and moved over to third on a Cust single to right. Pearce hustled home on the Mustelier sacrifice fly to take the 4-3 lead.
The Mud Hens had a chance to get back into the game in the top of the seventh, but the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen came in and preserved the 4-3 lead. With runners on second and third Manny Delcarmen came in and got Brad Eldred to fly out to centerfield to end the inning. Kevin Russo lost the ball in the lights at first, but made a full extension diving catch to his left for the third out.
The Yankees added another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single off the bat of Kevin Russo. Ramiro Pena scored easily from second after roping a one out double to the right-centerfield gap. The Mud Hens took the lead in the top half of the ninth inning. Bryan Holaday roped an RBI double and Eldred tied the game with a line drive single to left field. Guez then made it a 7-5 game with a two-run home run over the left field wall.
Ronnier Mustelier tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth with a two-RBI double with the bases loaded and one out in the inning. Curtis then drew the bases loaded walk allowing Cust to walk home for the victory.
Despite blowing the save, Kevin Whelan (WP, 3-0) earned the win for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Chris Bootcheck (LP, 1-2) suffered the loss forToledo. Adam Warren earned no decision for the Yankees going 6.1 innings allowing just two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking three.
The Yankees and Mud Hens continue a four game home set at Frontier Field Wednesday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Dellin Betances (2-4, 5.59) heads to the hill for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Jacob Turner (0-0, 5.00) gets the nod forToledo.
