A Drizzly Monday in Columbus

5-21 SWB Yankees Game Notes

The Yankees have traditionally had a tough time with Indians left hander David Huff and that dates back to his time in a Buffalo Bisons uniform as he was coming up through the Cleveland minor league system.  The southpaw did it to the Yankees again on Sunday afternoon, blanking SWB for 5.0 innings, allowing just three singles in what turned out to be a 4-1 Columbus win.  Huff pitched a complete game four hitter in the opening game of the four game series the two teams play at Frontier Field on May 8th (game one of a DH).  For his career against the Yankees, Huff is now 4-1 in six starts with a 1.98 ERA.  In 36.0 IP against SWB he has allowed 23H, 8R, 8ER with 7BB and 30K’s.  Unless the two teams meet in the Governors’ Cup Playoffs later on this summer, this guy is off the Yankees radar, and not a bit too soon.

Colin Curtis will miss Monday’s game with a sore hip after getting taken out of Saturday’s game against the Clippers.  Eduardo Nunez has been placed on the 7-Day DL retro to May 20th with a sore right thumb.  The Yankees have also placed Manny Banuelos on the 7 Day DL retro to May 19th with a sore left elbow. Catcher Ryan Baker has been activated from the DL.  The active roster for the Yankees currently sits at 24.

Yankees Director of Player Development Pat Roessler and Assistant Director of Baseball Operations Eric Schmitt have been on hand for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s series in Columbus against the Clippers getting a first hand look at the club on the second half of the eight game trip to Ohio.

Eduardo Nunez has been wearing number 24 since his return to the SWB Yankees on May 11th.  With RHP Adam Miller joining the Trenton Thunder prior to the start of the four game series in Columbus, Nunez will wear his familiar number 26 once the Yankees open up the four game series in Buffalo on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Field.

The off day for the Yankees on Wednesday has thrown the starting rotation into a bit of a flux prior to the four game set in Buffalo beginning on Thursday.  SWB will finish the four game series against Columbus with right hander D.J. Mitchell getting the start on Monday night and right hander Ramon Ortiz finishing off the series on Tuesday morning in the Yankees second 10:35 AM start on the current road trip.  Following the day off on Wednesday, SWB will go with right hander Adam Warren and RH Dellin Betances in the first two games of the series in Buffalo.  The third and fourth game starters should be penciled in by Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.

Buffalo’s starters for the four game series are set.  Thursday -RH Matt Harvey, Friday – RH Jeurys Familia, Saturday – LH Garrett Olson, Sunday – RH Chris Schwinden.
