Yankees Four Game Winning Streak Comes to an End
Pawtucket uses four run fourth inning to down SWB 4-3 in series opener
Pawtucket, RI – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (8-9) had won four straight games, while the Pawtucket Red Sox (15-5) carried an International League best eight game winning streak into the opening game of a two game series at McCoy Stadium on Tuesday night. The Paw Sox used a four run fourth inning off Yankees starter D.J. Mitchell (LP, 2-1) on route to a 4-3 win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead off Paw Sox starter Brandon Duckworth on a two out, two run homer from Brandon Laird. Laird’s first homer of the season cut through the teeth of a 17 mph wind and found the lawn section in left field for a 2-0 lead. Steve Pearce led off the inning with a single to left field to extend his hit streak to eight straight games, before Laird’s two out homer.
Mitchell (LP, 2-1) retired the first nine Red Sox hitters he faced as the Yankees carried the 2-0 to the bottom of the fourth. The second time through the Pawtucket line up was a different story for Mitchell as he allowed four runs on four hits, including two homers and a walk in the fourth as the Paw Sox grabbed a 4-2 lead. Daniel Nava led off the inning with his second homer of the season to cut the Yankees lead to 2-1. With one down in the fourth inning Mitchell walked Ryan Lavarnway and faced Mauro Gomez as the go ahead run. Gomez hit a Mitchell pitch into the Red Sox bullpen in left field and the lead was 3-2Pawtucket. The next batter Will Middlebrooks tripled, when his hit to the right center field gap got past a diving Colin Curtis, who tried to make a diving catch. Josh Kroeger doubled to left center scoring Middlebrooks and the Paw Sox lead was 4-2.
Mitchell pitched through the sixth inning allowing 5H and 4ER with 1BB, 1HBP and 6 SO. His counterpart Duckworth was pulled after the fourth inning allowing 4H, 2ER with 1BB and 3 SO earning no decision.
The Yankees picked up a single run in the seventh inning off Alex Wilson, who was the scheduled Red Sox starter on Tuesday before being moved to the bullpen. Laird led off the inning with a single and went first to third on a Pena single to right. He would come home on a sacrifice fly to center from Doug Bernier to cut the lead to one at 4-3.
Pawtucket’s bullpen kept the Yankees at bay the rest of the night, although SWB had a chance in the eighth inning against reliever Rich Hill who had runners at first and second base before a line out to right and a fielder’s choice ground out ended the inning. Former SWB Yankee Mark Melancon (S, 1) earned his first save for Pawtucket against his former team striking out the side in the ninth. Melancon allowed a two out double to Curtis before striking out Jayson Nix to end the game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Pawtucket wrap up the two game series Wednesday afternoon at McCoy Stadium with a 12:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Adam Warren (2-1, 5.17 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees, while Pawtucket will counter with right hander Doug Mathis (0-1, 6.35 ERA).
